Training

There are 4 training courses that are recognised by the British Association of Dramatherapists (BADTh) in the UK.

Whilst the courses have requirements specific to each, there are some generic aspects to all courses. To become a Dramatherapist you need to have a degree (or equivalent) in a related subject such as drama or psychology, plus experience working with people in a clinical setting and practical drama experience. You can then apply for a place on one of the 4 different courses that are run throughout the country which are recognised by the Department of Health, the British Association of Dramatherapists and the Health Professions Council. During the course you will have to undergo personal therapy and on completion will be required to have supervision with a qualified Dramatherapist before becoming a full member of BADTh.

Courses are available at:

Northern Trust for Dramatherapy, Manchester

University of Surrey Roehampton

Sesame, the Central School of Speech and Drama, London

University of Derby

For contact details, see the BADth website at www.badth.org.uk

To practice, Dramatherapists require to become State Registered with the Health Professions Council (HPC) as Arts Therapists (Drama).  State Registration is only possible on qualifying from one of the above courses - or if the applicant can provide prove of the level of experience required.

For some more information on dramatherapy courses - as well as short courses - log on to BADTh's website (www.badth.org.uk/training.html).
