Last year I decamped from Fife to London to do the Sesame/Central PGDip Drama and Movement Therapy course. It was wonderful and I came back full of enthusiasm. Since then I have been on a roller coaster of ups and downs; some doors seem firmly closed, others just open a crack; one or two have swung open but there is still a lot of hard work to do and sometimes I have no energy to push! My colleagues in London all seem to be working as much as they want but here in Fife, the creative therapies are not so well known. Having said that, in December there was a conference, ‘Weaving the Tapestry’ (Medicine, Mind, Body, Spirit) looking at non-medical approaches to promoting mental health and in February I was asked to do a workshop at a forum for Domestic Abuse, so there are the beginnings.

To begin with I did some volunteer work at a mental health drop in centre and naively thought that they would all think it so great I would be employed on the spot. Now I know that even though it went well and was appreciated I need to know how to write
proposals for my work and that I have to approach the right people to get anywhere.

At the moment I work with two children with special needs. This is very challenging and I am learning a huge amount; not only about actually ‘doing it’ but also about the
practicalities of setting something like this up in a school. I would like to hear from
others in similar circumstances, especially those working in schools. I find that my work is quite isolating and we need to support each other. My e-mail is: jinti@sesamescotland.com. I would welcome any communications.
