In 2001, the Mental Health Foundation (MHF) commissioned the Scottish Arts Therapies Forum (SATF) to develop 5 regional projects for inclusion in their Action Research Proposal for the Arts Therapies in Mental Health (ARPAT). In response to the request for project proposals, the Art Therapists Chryssy Gibbs and Jill Mallison from Skye and Locahber respectively, together with myself (Helen Scott-Danter) - a Dramatherapist living in Skye - collaborated to propose an arts therapies service for children and young people in Skye, Lochalsh and Lochaber. While in Lochaber the project would work through primary care, here on Skye we proposed to work through the education system. The ARPAT proposal wanted the 5 chosen projects to act as pilot studies for possible future work and for the projects to collect evidence based research and also make links with the Arts in Health movement. Initial local research was highly enthusiastic of the project. The funding was due in April 2002 but disappointingly, due to changes within MHF, everything came under review and it will now be turned into a UK-wide project, which will be implemented sometime in 2003 should funding be successful. However, at a meeting held at MHF Scotland in early March, the 5 projects already chosen decided to set up a separate Scottish-wide proposal to be put forward to the Scottish Executive. On 22nd April we will be holding a video conference to try to take this further. I hope to be able to report further on this potentially exciting project at a later date. |
