Future of
Service

After much consultation on future funding
and a constructive review of past therapy
delivery, Dundee Rep Theatre’s
Specialist Dramatherapy Service proposes
new developments in mental health care. It
aims to pilot increased partnership work
with Community Mental Health Teams
while retaining a theatre-base to offer high
profile public awareness-raising events.
Having reduced her schedule at the Rep.
dramatherapist Genevieve Smyth is exploring
professional development opportunities
beyond Tayside.

Genevieve has been supporting The British
Association of Dramatherapist’s (BADth)
Executive in a number of new initiatives.

* An International Taskforce Working Party to support overseas members and fellow drama-
therapists abroad. She is helping to organise an international panel at the next US drama-
therapy conference and, if attending, may promote Dramatherapy Scotland providing a
small contribution for expenses is recoverable. Give Gen a call H. 01382 295074 if you
have any promotion ideas or queries.
* BADth has recently completed a Business Plan outlining work priorities for the year.
BADth is now part of the Council for Professions Supplementary to Medicine (CPSM)
UK Reference Group which advises a legislative proposals group on its proposals for
new legislation to replace the CPSM Act 1960, using the Order-Making Power of the
Health Act 1999 (are you with me?!) In effect this means preparing for CPSM changing
into a new more powerful Health Professions Council (HPC).
* BADth’s annual conference is on September 15-16. Called ‘Narrative, Story and Play’, it
features keynote speaker, dramatherapy trainer and author Mooli Lahad from Israel. The
venue is the Arts Therapies Department at University of Hertfordshire (as short train
journey from N.London). A travel subsidy from BADth is tempting Scottish Link Person
Elinor Vettraino to present a Dramatherapy Scotland display there!

The Scottish Arts Therapies Forum (SATF) now has 72 members across the arts therapies spectrum including 45% of Scotland’s art therapists and 70% of dramatherapists (including 3 trainees on the Manchester course). Dramatherapists Genevieve Smyth and Noel McDermott have joined the management committee and welcome views on how SATF should proceed, particularly in relation to SATF becoming a consultative body for the Scottish Office in light of State Registration. The first AGM was held on Saturday 18th March where its new Research Sub-Committee was ratified. This met the following Saturday to discuss incentive for developing arts therapies
